The Oberammergau Passion Play

 

Next year, from May until October, the world famous Passion Play will be performed in Oberammergau, Germany. The Play has been performed every 10 years since 1634, making the 2010 event the 41st time it has been performed.

The Passion Play came about in the 17th century during the Thirty Years’ War, when, after much suffering and many deaths caused by the bubonic plague, the surviving population of the small German village vowed they would perform the “play of suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus” every 10 years if they were spared from extinction. In 1634, they kept their promised and for the first time spectators came to Oberammergau from all parts of Germany, attracted by the great power and mystique of the play.

The heartfelt tradition still lives on today. More than 2000 residents of Oberammergau combine their efforts to create the powerful story. The performance blends dramatic text, beautiful music and choral accompaniment as scenes from both the Old and New Testaments are depicted. The seven-hour event which includes a meal during intermission can only be described as unforgettable.
